Joe's baby sister keeps him waiting

Our daughter is due today, but as yet there are no signs that she'll be making an appearance.

Deborah was expecting her to be here by now as Joe was two days early and she says usually a second baby arrives earlier if the first is early.

As for a name, a few weeks ago we'd decided on 'Emmie', but I'm now having seconds thoughts. I quite like 'Jess', in honour of British heptathlete Jessica Ennis, who should win gold this evening in the London Olympics. I just hope our daughter doesn't turn up when I'm watching Ennis in the 800m this evening!

Go Jess!

The Olympic Flame

I really should try harder to find the time to update this blog, but in my defence Joe is more demanding of my time these days. He started walking a few weeks ago, although at present he is still happier crawling, and I've got to keep a constant eye on him.

He usually takes five baby steps before throwing himself to the floor and bolting away on all fours. He's not as advanced at walking as I was at 13 months, as my mother recalls that at 10 months I would escape from my cot Houdini style before negotiating the stairs and climbing on to the kitchen stool to make myself and my twin sister a jam sandwich - usually at 5am!

Like me at his age, Joe is also an early riser. It's rare for him to sleep later than 6am. However, his dawn chorus of 'Daa-dee' was quite helpful last weekend as it woke me in time to see the Olympic Flame leave Bournemouth Pier on its early morning journey to Southampton.

We left home at 7am and walked for an hour along the promenade from Southbourne, past Boscombe Reef, to the pier at Bournemouth, stopping on the way to pose for pictures with a Met Police bike rider who told us he'd accompanied the Olympic Torch all over Britain. (7 days on 7 days off -nice job if you can get it!) Apparently, his colleague had only just learned to ride a police bike after having his lucky ticket pulled out of a police helmet.

To my surprise my heavily pregnant wife joined us on the long walk to see the flame, but she was glad she did as the atmosphere amongst the early birds was quite special. Children waved their union flags in anticipation and policemen, torch carriers and Olympic Mascots posed for pictures with young babies. The only thing missing it seemed was a politician!

And then the flame appeared and after what seemed like two seconds it was gone! But no one seemed to care - they'd witnessed history (and captured it on their smart phones) and in an orderly fashion the large crowd filed away for breakfast - a very British occasion.

Jelly, ice cream and pirate cupcakes

My decision to dance naked around my garden in homage to the Sun God proved a good move as the rain to everyone's amazement stayed away from Southwood Avenue on Saturday.

Our garden party to celebrate Joe's first birthday was thankfully a big success with the sun shining over Bournemouth for the first time in a week. Burgers and beers were consumed in large quantities and the nappy changing mat was in constant use as parents opted to make an afternoon of our hospitality. Indeed, an extra trip to Tesco for more burger buns was deemed necessary by my overworked father-in-law who took on Barbeque duties for the afternoon.

As for Joe and his baby friends, they seemed to have a great time. I was especially thrilled to see him displaying some of the Hawkins charm by enticing girlfriend Rivah into the sun tent with a handful of strawberry jelly and a white chocolate button. She gleefully accepted the invitation before Joe, caveman style, pulled her hair and dragged her into his hide. Rivah's mummy saved the situation with an iced lolly before any tears could flow.

The only slight dampener on day didn't come from a raindrop, but the car trouble which resulted in my sister arriving three hours late. All wasn't lost though as she arrived in time to deliver her bounty of pirate cupcakes for the kids party bags. And I was left with a chocolate teddy bear cake, that I had in reserve just in case she failed to arrive, all to myself. Yum! Yum!

Happy Birthday!

Joe-Joe will be celebrating his first birthday today with a garden party and 16 of his baby/toddler friends.

Lots of planning has gone into the event with a pirate cup cake spread by his auntie Nina to form the table centrepiece.

Joe-Joe has a new outfit for the occasion and a new haircut, courtesy of local celebrity barber 'Mr Barber'.

White noise

I recently upgraded my mobile phone from a five year old Nokia one that didn't even have a camera to the latest Apple iPhone. As you can imagine, it's like I'm now watching Tottenham Hotspur when for years I've been following Accrington Stanley. I'm truly astounded by my iPhone and after just a few days getting to grips with some of its many functions I can say that it really has changed my life. I can even write this blog using one of the applications I've downloaded!

One of these life changing functions is the 'White Noise' application. Since Joe was born he's always been a good sleeper, although we struggled at first to get him to take a daytime nap until I came up with the idea of leaving the hairdryer on in the room that he was sleeping. It's worked a treat, but I've always been conscious that this practice might be dangerous as I'm sure they aren't built to be left on for more than 20 minutes at a time. In fact, the worry that it might catch fire has caused me to lose sleep at night! Anyway, the White Noise app has solved the problem as I can now play white noise through the phone. Joe goes down within a few minutes of turning on the 'extreme rain pouring' setting. The 'crickets chirping', 'oscillating fan' and 'beach waves crashing' also do the job just as well, although for some reason he hasn't taken to the 'train ride track noise' - maybe there are leaves on the line.

Joe is expecting a sister!

We had our 20 week scan last week and it revealed that we're expecting a daughter...well, the midwife was '90 per cent sure' that it's a girl. Our little lady it seems preferred to keep her legs closed on the day.

Deborah's ecstatic as it must be said she wanted a girl first time around!

I dare say it won't be long before the colour pink starts to appear in the many shopping bags that find their way into our home.

If Joe had been a girl, Deborah was set on calling him Martha. However, she appears to have gone off that name now and is favouring Isla. I've told her to hurry up and decide as I need to rename this blog!

Joe-Joe, Isla and Me! ... Sounds good enough to me.

The £4 haircut

Joe-Joe's hair was looking a real mess earlier this week. His mop had started to get into his eyes and this prompted my wife to take him to the barbers for the first time. Apparently, he sat quite still on her lap while the barber gave our Wolf Baby a 'short back and sides'. He certainly looks pleased with the result!

Joe-Joe's on the move!

My mother recently reminded me that as a child I was an early walker. I started walking when just 10 months old - five months before my twin sister! Mum said I was a nightmare as I'd often climb out of my cot in the early hours of the morning, slide down the stairs on my bum and walk into the kitchen where I'd climb up on to a stool and make a sandwich. My mother would usually wake up on hearing the commotion and rush downstairs to find me holding the bread knife and covered in strawberry jam! And it seems my eight month old is aiming to follow in his father's footsteps and get on the move earlier than most.

Joe-Joe's loving this new skill so much that he refuses to sit down and will only stand and cling on to my legs or the sofa. I feel exhausted just watching him! He's just started to make rudimentary baby steps, although he always ends up in a heap on the floor when I let go of his arm - much to his annoyance. The only thing that annoys him more is the fact that he can only crawl backwards! Check out the home movies.

Super Spurs Sperm

A little hand waves to the crowd.
I've managed to double my workload this summer after getting too amorous with Mrs. Hawkins when celebrating Tottenham Hotspur's 3-1 victory over Queen's Park Rangers back in October. (Yes, I really have worked out when our next baby was conceived.)

To use a football cliché: we're "over the moon", although it must be said that Deborah would have preferred to have waited until Joe-Joe was one year old before trying for our second baby. My   Super Spurs sperm though had other ideas and triumphantly reached their destination to claim an unexpected victory.

Our visit to the hospital last week confirmed that Joe-Joe's brother or sister is due to arrive on August 4 - the week before the start of the 2012/13 football season. Hopefully by then the Spurs players will be wearing a gold badge on their arm as the newly crowned Premier League champions!

Barefootin'

Today I decided to capture Joe-Joe's hatred of socks on camera. He absolutely detests wearing them and at every available opportunity will pull them from his feet (usually with his teeth) and go barefootin' . As a result, his sock drawer is a mix-match of odd ones. Yesterday, when cleaning out the car I found five socks, all of them different, on the back seat. And this afternoon, he returned from a stroll strapped to me in his baby carrier with one foot blue with cold after kicking his sock off during the walk.

Take a look at this funny video as Joe-Joe attempts to do a 'Sandie Shaw'.
